The Milnrow Band was at the main hub of all practical work at our recent Conducting Course in West Yorkshire. The recent successes at the Grand Shield and even more recently at the English National Championship ensured that the visiting conductors and players were in for a breath-taking rehearsal.
Whilst the sectional rehearsals teased out various timbres and techniques it was the massed bands which had the most impact. The extreme dynamics, the tonal colours and the drive to make music was certainly impressive. Milnrow’s MD Mareika Gray certainly brought out the very best in the massed band but course director Richard Evans also had a few tricks of the trade and was magnificent in the positive way he interacted with all players, conductors and guests.
We have much to celebrate in brass banding and this one occasion where only the best was on offer.
