The Roy Newsome Memorial Trophy
On Saturday 8th. September, as part of the Great Northern Brass Arts Festival, the Bridgewater Hall hosted the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, and what an enthralling and memorable occasion unfolded.
The NYBB, under the direction of Dr. Robert Childs presented a superbly constructed program, admirably compered by John Maines and delivered with remarkable maturity, professionalism, and quality playing.
One of many highlights was the beautiful and sensitive cornet solo by James Fountain in “My Love is like a Red, Red Rose” which, as is well documented, was a favourite piece of the late Dr. Roy Newsome for his wife Muriel. Roy was for many, many years actively involved with the NYBB, and the NABBC planned a special presentation to the band.
Initially organised and arranged through Sydney Swancott, the Chairman of the NABBC Andrew White presented a “Roy Newsome Memorial Trophy” to Muriel, who in turn presented this to Robert Childs ( on behalf of the band ) to be awarded to the most aspiring young conductor of their bi-annual courses.
This was a truly outstanding concert, of which Dr. Roy would have been extremely proud.
